Phases of Play & Development

When you are planning a session one of the main factors you should consider is the players age as this can affect how effective the session actually is.

This is because different ages will have different needs and requirements for their age as their concepts of the full game can be limited.

This can be split into 3 different phases within coaching. These consist of; Foundation Phase, Youth Development Phase, Professional (Adult) Development Page.

The age ranges are only guides as some players and teams may incorporate higher age phases into their training sessions & matches.

Foundation Phase (5-10 year olds)

This should mainly focus on mastering the ball and allowing players to be creative all over the pitch. At around ages 9-10 try to start focusing on teamwork and continue with ball mastery.

Key Areas:-

  • Develop a mastery of the ball

  • Be creative

  • Be exciting & positive in possession

  • Enjoy wining the ball back

  • Difficult to beat in a 1v1

  • Creative in positing & ability to win the ball back

  • Alert when the opposition has the ball

  • Enjoy defending in different roles.

  • React quickly when the ball is won or lost

  • Travel quickly with & without the ball

  • Win the ball back as quickly as possible

Youth Development Phase (11-16 year olds)

Carrying on from working together as a team and ball mastery. Start to focus more on tactical knowledge & awareness. In addition, focus on encouragement of tactical improvements and creativity.

Key Areas:-

  • Receive the ball on all areas of the pitch

  • Excite with the ball and seek creative solutions in game situations e.g outnumbered

  • Connect and combine creatively with others to open up defences & score goals

  • Be prepared to defend 1v1 and be confident without cover or support.

  • Intelligent defending e.g patience, timing & outwit your opponent

  • Win the ball cleanly, regaining and retaining possession in the same action to start attacks.

  • Instinctive decision-making e.g react quickly & positively both attacking & defending.

  • Prevent progression by disrupting or destroying momentum, forcing errors and protecting the goal.

Professional (Adult) Development Phase (17+)

Players should have good ball mastery, be creative, act in a positive manner in and out of possession. They should also have an understanding on tactical knowledge and awareness In addition, the players should start understanding changing tactics. There should still be reinforcements on being creative and encouragement.

Key Areas:-

  • Retain possession with intent: both individually and as a team

  • Use clever combinations to create and score goals

  • Outstanding individuality and teamwork

  • Dominate individual defending scenarios to regain quickly and cleanly in order to start attacks

  • Defend in an appropriate manner in relation to the state of the game

  • Work individually and collectively to dominate defending scenarios and nullify opposition attacks.

  • React instinctively to transitions - both individually and as a team - based on the state of the game and pre-determined team tactics and strategies

  • Recognise opportunities to penetrate the opposition quickly, whilst also understanding when to retain and build possession, control the tempo and change the speed of play

  • Recognise, understand and react to potential danger
